Gabriel Plamondon

It is with such sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Gabriel Plamondon on January 16, 2026. He was predeceased by his parents Albert and Olivine, two brothers, Romeo and Archie and former wives Patricia Plamondon and Joyce Plamondon. He is survived by two sisters; Tina Ross (Ross Richards) and Lea Jensen (Bill), Four children; Daniel Plamondon (Darlene), Johanne Plamondon (Rick Trebilco), Darren Plamondon, Lori Branderhorst (John), seven grandchildren; David, Rachel, Allan, Brendan, Meghan, Leland, and Amber. Four great-grandchildren; Michael, Emerson, Hudson, and Rheilly, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Gabe was born April 9, 1934, in the French village of Plamondon Alberta, first child of Albert and Olivine and first grandchild of Maxime and Lea Ladouceur. A proud Metis family that settled in the area dating back to the 1860’s as fur traders. He spent many hours with his Moshum (Grandfather) learning all about the outdoors, it is during this time where he developed his love and knowledge of the land as well as hearing about the stories of the days gone by. With natural curiosity and a gift for learning new skills, Gabe left home at just seventeen to begin working. His courageous spirit and nomadic ways took him from the oil patch, to welding in the gold mines, to building cut lines for Northern Power. Along the way, he helped construct a cathedral and later turned his hands to trapping and taxidermy. Life was not always so kind to him, but he was a survivor with a charismatic personality, a sense of humor and an ability to love deeply. Home was Northern Alberta, and the Territories. (Yukon, NWT, Nunavut). He loved the north and travelled every road with fervor and enthusiasm meeting new people and forged lifelong friendships along the way. He was the last of his generation, an adventurer at heart, more at home in small towns and outdoors than in the city. He would never miss an opportunity to cast a line or call in a moose. His heart belonged in the bush either at work or at play. A hunter, fisherman and last of the trappers, he preferred a camper by the river telling stories and sharing laughs around a campfire. Grandpa Gabe was a big man who cut a large swath with his presence. Being a social person and natural storyteller, he enjoyed live interaction with family and friends at the rendezvous or speaking to the animals and birds that came along his path in the forest. He was never a man to stare at a phone or a TV. Gabe was very musical along with his siblings and leaves behind many happy memories over the years of family gatherings that included the accordion and the fiddle. He was deeply proud of his children and grandchildren and how well they were doing for themselves and left hope that his great grand grandchildren would do well too and help build a good world. We will forever miss and lovingly remember our “Big Buffalo,” dad, grandpa, “big grandpa,” brother, uncle, and friend. The family invites all who knew and loved Gabe to attend a committal service for interment on Saturday March 14th at 11am at the Holy Cross Mausoleum - 14611 Mark Messier Trail NW Edmonton and will be followed immediately by a celebration of life at the St. Albert Inn- Kingswood Room 156 St Albert Trail St. Albert.
