With sad hearts but with gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the peaceful passing of Marilyn McSporran on December 11, 2024, at the age of 90. Until her last waking moment, Marilyn was embraced by her cherished children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces and close friends who celebrated with her an extraordinary life of love, compassion, and adventure. An emotional support dog, representing the many animals that blessed her life, provided comfort to all present. As she wanted, Marilyn exited this life with her favourite music, scriptures and poems. She basked in gratitude as stories and accolades and photos of her great life were shared with her. She was able to say a personal farewell to everyone, her wit and vibrant spirit shining through, leaving an indelible impression on us all. Marilyn dedicated over 60 years to an exceptional nursing career, including her impactful work in Palliative Care, Public Health and Arctic communities. Her long career was a testament to her boundless empathy and unwavering commitment to serve others. A passionate advocate for social justice, Marilyn championed Truth and Reconciliation, dedicating her voice and energy to fostering understanding, healing and justice for First Nations peoples. With a zest for life and a keen sense of adventure, Marilyn loved traveling and exploring diverse cultures. She was happiest outdoors—camping, hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, kayaking, and canoeing. Her signature “garbage can turkey” was a staple of Thanksgiving camping trips. She is lovingly remembered by her children and grandchildren, who carry her legacy of kindness, adventure, wisdom, and humour in their hearts. Marilyn was also a treasured friend and auntie to many, leaving a legacy of love and laughter that will endure. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the compassionate teams of Sturgeon General Hospital, Chartwell Residence-St. Albert, and Medical Assistance in Dying – Edmonton for their care and support that went above and beyond. To honour Marilyn’s incredible life, a celebration will be held at the St. Albert United Church for friends and family at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers and cards, donations may be made to Dying With Dignity Canada honouring her lifelong dedication to upholding the right to live and die with dignity or the organization Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign recognizing the value of community and equality for women. Marilyn, your love, vibrant spirit, laughter, fortitude and courage will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know you. Rest in peace, surrounded by the joy and light you gave so freely. You will be dearly missed but celebrated forever.
