A Beautiful Love Story Comes to a Close: Bruce & Gail Hogle Pass Away Our Mom and Dad met more than 70 years ago. It truly was love at first sight and we have just been reminded they could never live without each other. We said goodbye to Mom March 7th and Dad followed after her, passing three weeks later on March 28th. Their love story dates back to the early 1950s. The two of them met at a dance in Mom's hometown of Medicine Hat. Even though Mom left the city to pursue nursing at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, something had been ignited. Dad, who had joined the reserves, was having beers with his buddies from Camp Borden when he boasted he knew a nurse in Edmonton who could get them all dates! The boys headed north and a massive 6 couple blind date ensued. Mom and Dad began dating regularly after that. They were married June 5, 1954, in Medicine Hat, despite the protests of Mom's mother, Marguerite, who was unhappy her Catholic daughter was marrying a Protestant boy! Religion took a backseat to love. Dad went on to an award winning career in the media that ran for more than five decades. He carved out a legendary reputation as the Director of News and Public Affairs at CFRN/CTV, where his daily editorials and pioneering initiatives made a powerful impact in the community and across the nation. He worked tirelessly for charities like The Good Neighbour Fund and the Shrine, as well as many others. He was recognized for his work by all levels of government with the Order of Canada, the Alberta Award of Excellence and being named one of the Edmontonians of the Century, among countless other honours. Mom was always there to support Dad in his career but she was also kept very busy raising their three 'high maintenance' boys! Once she had helped Bill, Randy and Steve navigate their way through school, she returned to her love of nursing, working in the University of Alberta's Student Services. She, too, loved to give back to the community, devoting a lot of time to Canterbury Foundation and Pilgrim's Hospice. Mom and Dad also loved spending time with friends, their bridge clubs and the Shriners and Daughters of the Nile. Their three children went on to raise families and pursue careers of their own. Bill married Ky. They had Bruce Junior, who married Nuon, and they had children Andy and Mia. Randy wed Sharon and Steve married Cathy, and they had two children: Zac married Ava and they had Ben and Maria; Kirsten married Dustin and they had Nella. Children, grandchildren and great grandchildren made their way to the Sturgeon Hospital in St. Albert to visit and share love with Mom and Dad/Grandma and Grandpa/Great Grandma and Great Grandpa. Mom had a fall at Canterbury Court and was taken to the Sturgeon. Dad had a tough time without Mom and had a fall of his own a week later and joined Mom in the same room at the Sturgeon. The nurses, aides and doctors provided amazing care for them. Dad celebrated his 95th birthday in the Sturgeon on February 25th. In the same room on March 5th, Mom turned 92, and Dad made his way over to her bed to give her hand a birthday squeeze. Mom passed away two days later. Dad then went to the Gene Zwozdesky Centre, where he passed March 28th, to go join his sweetheart, Gail. They are the last surviving siblings in their families. Dad was predeceased by his brother, Chuck, and his sisters Gerry and Barb. Mom was predeceased by brothers Barrie and Ralph. We know there is a big family reunion taking place now and Mom and Dad are right in the middle of it. Their love is eternal. -30- There will be a Celebration of Lives Friday, April 5th, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Timothy's Anglican Church, located at 8420 - 145 Street in Edmonton.
